Preschool Speech & Language Screenings

Speech and Language Screenings are important to help ensure a child’s skills are on track.

Screenings are designed to identify children who could benefit from further speech and language assessment. Screenings identify “red flags” or areas of concern however they do not confirm or deny the presence of a speech or language disorder. Screenings also provide an excellent baseline of speech and language skills to later measure against future communication growth and development. 

A Screening is a brief assessment (20-30 minutes) of a child’s communication skills in the following areas:

• Comprehension         
• Expressive Language
• Speech Development
• Social Language                                     
• Hearing (if testable) 
• Stuttering  Voice Oral Motor

Why is it important?

The most critical period of speech and language development occurs between birth and age 5.  At this time their brains are developing and absorbing the information they obtain from what they see, hear and touch. Speech and language early deficits are very common and affect about 1 in 12 children. This is a critical time to address any developmental delays. Assessing and treating children before entering school gives them time to adapt to their “new” speech and language patterns. Some children may not need to continue therapy after they enter school. 

When entering grade school:

A child with speech, language, or listening problems is at a disadvantage upon entering school as these issues affect the child’s ability to: 

• Follow directions
• Understand basic concepts
• Process auditory information
• Learn new words
• Understand and create stories
• Exercise good social skills
• Interact socially 
• Make friends 
• Communicate needs or problems to teacher
• Process and retain new information 
• and much more 

You will receive a report to provide to your Pediatrician and/or school.
